The
Big Dome is 39 ft. in diameter with a 10 ft. by 16 ft. extension that
serves
as our entrance way. The dome is almost completely surrounded by
wooden decks. Our home is heated only by a wood burning stove and
the sun. The pentagon shaped skylight faces south. Four
skylights
and large windows give us a lot of heat from the sun. Our solar
panels
help heat our hot water. That system saves us about $17.00 a
month.
The dome was built with all 2X6 lumber on the exterior walls.
These
walls and triangles are insulated with polyurethane foam.

Basement

Our
full
basement floor is just above ground level in the front of the house and
about eight feet below in the back. We have large double doors going
into
the basement in front of the house. They lead into the wood room which
is our mud room, laundry room, wood stove area and this room serves as
a seasonal staging area. In the winter it is wood stove and cart loads
of fire wood. In the summer it is filled with bicycles and whatever we
might be into at the time. This room also houses our washing machine
and
dryer and a door to the laundry chute that drops down from two doors on
the main floor of the house. One door is in the main bathroom and
the other is in the hall just outside the main bathroom. From the
wood room a door leads to the work shop. We have a half bath in
the
front of the basement. On the other side of the basement is a
small
family room with large bi-fold doors to the hot tub room. Also
from
the family room is a hall-way to the freezer and cold cellar. In
the center of the basement are the stairs leading up to the main floor
of the dome.

Our
front
door opens into the entranceway. The entranceway is open into the
living room. We have a 12 foot tree in the living
room.
The dining room is in the front of the house. The dining room is
one of the our favorite rooms, with all the windows and skylights it's
very bright and cheery. We eat all our meals in the dining room.
From the living room and dining rooms you can look up and see the top
of
the dome. The kitchen is very small and shaped like a
galley.
The kitchen is strictly a working kitchen - no room for sitting sipping
tea. The back door is in the hall. We have a very small
back
yard -so small that we have it almost all taken up with decks and a
summer
kitchen and a small above ground pool. Off of the hallway we have
two bedrooms and the computer room. The bathroom is
in
the very center of the house. In the dining room is the stairway
that goes up to the top floor.
Top Floor

On
the
top floor we have a 12 x 20 foot family room and two more
bedrooms.
None of the walls up there go the whole way to the ceiling so that
airflow
is not blocked. The bedrooms have a 8 foot wall for privacy but
the
wall of the den is only 40 inches high so you can look down over it
into
the living room and dining room.
We
built the dome ourselves with help from our friends!
